We were delighted to discover this beautiful area and take a short stroll around Umbagong District Park which runs between Macgregor, Holt and Latham. It’s just a few minutes drive away from the Kippax shops, so really handy if you are headed that way to the shopping centre or live nearby. The park encompasses around 50 hectares of woody grasslands and is a beautiful spot for walk.

We parked in the main Umbagong car park and spent a leisurely hour wandering around some of the footpaths and really enjoyed meandering alongside Ginniderra creek. First we walked over a bridge looking out for birds in the reeds alongside the bridge, as well as looking up in the gum trees to see the cockatoos and parrots. As we walked upstream a little it became even more peaceful just being alongside the creek and then seeing and hearing the creek bubbling back downstream over the rocks.

A quick check on google maps confirmed that the Ginninderra creek flows down to here from Lake Ginninderra and then continues on all the way down to the Murrumbidgee river.

Umbagong District is an important natural wildlife corridor brimming with native animals and also provides a fantastic habitat for native birds.

The park has a number of paved footpaths which make it easy for people to walk, cycle or push a pram or stroller around and provides easy walking for those less mobile as the majority of the paths are paved and even.

Later on we walked around to see some of the beautiful trees and boulders and then further down the path, we enjoyed jumping across the giant stepping stones across the creek.

During our walk we saw quite a few different local birds including cockatoos and parrots. More than 100 species of ACT birds can be spotted here.

Where is Umbagong District Park?

You can find Umbagong District Park nestled along the Ginninderra Creek Corridor – between Ginninderra Drive and Southern Cross Drive. We headed for the car park on Florey Drive in Latham, Canberra ACT 2615. The park is stretches between Latham, Macgregor and Holt. It’s a short 5 min drive from the Kippax Shopping Centre in Holt.

Is there a playground like in Umbagong District Park?

There are 2 playgrounds – Wombat Stew and the Fort playground. We didn’t wander right up to them this time. Wombat Stew looked more suitable for younger children. The fort playground is further along the walk and looks to be an older style for the slightly older children with a larger tower and slide.

Are there toilets in Umbagong District Park?

There are no toilets in the park, so you’ll need to plan your visit accordingly!

Which Canberra birds can you see in Umbagong District Park?

While on our short walk we saw parrots and cockatoos including Sulphur-crested cockatoos and Crimson Rosellas, as well as a number of colourful birds we weren’t sure which they were exactly. If you spend more time you’re likely to see a range of local birds – there are also plenty of smaller birds in the reeds near the water. More than 100 species of birds have been spotted in Umbagong District Park.
