Canberra in Autumn

Visit Canberra in Autumn to see spectacular colours in the trees. At this time of year you can also be really lucky with warm sunny, blue sky days, which mean the colours in the tree pop even more against the bright blue backdrop!

One of the most scenic places in Canberra to see Autumn colours is alongside Lake Burley Griffin

At this time of year you can also expect some cool evenings and cold mornings – sometimes foggy or frosty mornings. There are plenty of places to snuggle up and get warm in Canberra too. So whether you enjoy coffee, hot chocolate, a cup of tea or  a glass of wine by a fireplace, it’s a brilliant time to visit Australia’s capital city.

For Europeans you might be surprised to learn that Canberra’s Autumn runs from March through to May each year. Something I still find hard to wrap my head around!

Make sure you have the National Arboretum in Canberra on your Autumn colours places to visit list

The trees are usually at their peak during the first half of May, exactly when, depends on the weather and the trees and each year the weather will be slightly different and will affect how quickly the leaves change colour and how quick the fall off the trees. It’s worth being aware that the weather patterns seem to alter slightly every year and particularly with any wet and wild weather (we had quite a bit of rain this year earlier in May and some windy days) the leaves be blown off more easily in the windy weather.

This year in Canberra in 2024 I noticed that the trees were looking very pretty early in May and there are still some colours to be found in the 4th week of May but the majority of the leaves have now fallen down. There’s still a chance to jump in the leaves though!
