A few years ago, I went to Australia on a working holiday visa.
I visited lots of places within the beautiful country such as Melbourne, Tasmania, Sydney and Brisbane.
I hadn’t heard of Canberra before and according to my friends, it was just “a load of government buildings and quite boring” so I didn’t bother visiting.
Fast forward to 2018 and my wife and I along with our daughter make the big move to Australia for good.
Where is the place we go?
Canberra of course.
Canberra is certainly not boring. It is a great city to bring up kids and has lots of things to do for all the family. It is a fairly safe city but has lots of bars and restaurants, cafes, museums and galleries, events and other fantastic activities to keep it exciting!
When we moved to Canberra, we came to the conclusion that it was a quieter city than say Sydney or Brisbane, but that just meant there was less crime.
It seemed like a safer city.
There seemed like there was lots to do for us as a small family and wasn’t boring at all.
We are from the UK and Canberra did seem very similar to the town we were staying in England.
What can you do in Canberra?
There are many things you can do in Canberra to stop you from getting bored.
These could include going out for dinner or going for drinks with friends, visiting a museum to take in some culture or just taking your kids to a playground.

There’s probably a playground within walking distance from your house if you live in the capital city.
Mountain Walks
Another way to stop getting bored is to go on a lovely walk.
Why don’t you take your kids up Mount Painter or Mount Majura?
I’m sure they’ll appreciate it when they see the stunning views from the top.
Cycle Lanes
There are lots of cycle lanes in Canberra.
This is very handy if you want to get in shape or just stay in shape.
Cycling is becoming more and more popular these days and Canberra is a very cycle-friendly city.
So if you haven’t taken your bicycle up one of the mountains or you’re too scared to, then the cycle lanes are a good second choice!
Events
Canberra is host to many events.
They are generally annual events, meaning they happen once a year.
Some of the bigger events are Floriade and Enlighten.
Floriade is a flower event that happens in the spring where it showcases lots of different flowers and plants and Enlighten is a light festival that is always fun with some amazing light displays!
There are lots of other events too such as the hot air balloons.
There you go.
This is not an exhaustive list by far, but I hope it shows you that Canberra is not a boring city and does have some exciting things going for it!
